Billionaires, hackers, the Chinese and The New York Times

Chinese hackers took notice to stories in 2012 about communist billionaires written about by newspapers like The New York Times and blogs like ThinkBillions.

The hack attacks began after the newspaper published "Billions in Hidden Riches For Family of Chinese Leader" on October 25, 2012, identifying the significant accumulated wealth of the family of Chinese prime minster Wen Jiabao.

Symantec, the software security company, has gone into corporate-pr damage-control mode over failure to block hackers on Times corporate pc's.

China says NO to The New York Times

China blocks Internet access to New York Times

BEIJING (Reuters) – China, widely criticized for its censorship of the media, this week blocked access to The New York Times, the newspaper said on Saturday.

When computer users in cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou tried to connect on Friday to nytimes.com, they received a message that the site was not available, the newspaper said.

There was no access to the site from Beijing late on Saturday without the protection of a virtual private network (VPN).

The State Information Office said it had no information on the case.
